There's usually something on.
Board game nights, community lunches, meetups for people new to the city. They exist for one reason: to give you a reason to leave the house on a Thursday. Turning up alone is the normal way to turn up.

Come at the start rather than the middle — walking into a half-full room is far easier than a full one. And tell whoever's on the counter it's your first time. They'll take it from there.
